known as "the fighting parson" ... During the Revolution he and his wife were shot down by British sentinels, he at Elizabeth Point, New Jersey, Nov. 24, 1781. The story is told that his wife was sitting on her porch with her baby in her arms when she was brutally killed. After this he became obsessed with zeal to carry retribution for this dastardly act. In the battle of Springfield, New Jersey he shouted to his troops, "Give 'em Watts, boys!" as they used Watts hymn books for packing to load their guns, and the incident has been made famous in picture, song and story.
